The Bankster

When I registered for the Book Reviews programme at Blogadda, I naively assumed that there wouldn’t be many people interested. Oh boy! How wrong was I! I waited patiently signing up for book after book. Finally, I have ‘The Bankster’ by Ravi Subramanian in my hands.

‘The Bankster’ by Ravi Subramanian is an intriguing read. The book opens with two different scenarios. Diamonds are sourced illegally from war stricken Angola in the beginning of the 21st century. In 1979, an innocent man is arrested on the pretext that he has stolen the tusks of a dead elephant. Then the story moves to 2011 to the Great Boston Global Bank GB2. Most of the story revolves around the employees of the bank. Vikram Bahl, a dashing banker uses people ruthlessly. He believes in making profit for himself and doesn’t have time for emotions. Nikhil, Zinaida,Anand and Tanuja are other employees of the bank who lend the necessary color to the story. Each one is interested in furthering his or her own interests. The focus is on achieving the numbers rather than working based on trust and principles.Suddenly, three employees are dead. Their deaths are passed off as accidents. That’s when Karan Panjabi enters the story. He is a press reporter and an ex-banker who resolves to find out the truth. The seemingly innocent deaths are not accidents but gruesome murders. His investigation throws up a few surprises.

Ravi Subramanian has done abrilliant job. The book moves at just the right pace and direction. He really kept the suspense built up until the last page. The book moves on fast track when Karan Panjabi enters the scene. The bank acted as a perfect backdrop for the story to build on. However, the essence of the story is not just about fraudulent practices in a bank. The author interconnected three different stories, the diamond dealing, the protest against a nuclear reactor and the illegal practices in the bank into one. The connection is not very obvious at the start. The best part about the book is that the the author keeps you guessing. The very basic requirement of a thriller is that you just can’t wait to finish reading it. This book does exactly that. The climax is a clincher. Loved it! Overall, very well written and a gripping thriller.
